Shiseido The Collagen vs DHC vs Orihiro: Japanese Collagens Compared by Formula and Price

15 September 2026 · 8 min read

A practical comparison of three popular Japanese collagen brands by formula, format and cost per course, plus a simple method for working out the real price per day.

Shiseido The Collagen vs DHC vs Orihiro: Japanese Collagens Compared by Formula and Price

If you have shopped for Japanese collagen, three names come up again and again: Shiseido The Collagen, DHC and Orihiro. The short answer to which one to buy is that they solve different problems. Shiseido builds its products around an extended beauty formula, where collagen sits alongside hyaluronic acid, ceramides and plant extracts. DHC keeps its formulas short and its format range wide, from capsules to powder and ready-to-drink bottles. Orihiro focuses on large peptide doses in economical packaging. Below is how the three compare on formula, format and price, and how to work out which one fits your routine.

Three approaches to the same ingredient

Technically all three sell the same base ingredient: hydrolysed collagen, or collagen peptides, sourced from fish, pork or beef. The differences start where the collagen itself ends.

Shiseido The Collagen is a line from a cosmetics company, and the thinking behind it is cosmetic. Collagen rarely travels alone here. It is paired with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, vitamin C and blends of fruit and flower extracts, so part of the price is the supporting formula rather than the peptide count.

DHC is best known for mass-market supplements at accessible prices. The ingredient lists are short and take about five seconds to read: collagen plus one or two vitamins. What the brand offers instead of complexity is choice of format.

Orihiro sits in the value segment, with large bags and very literal labelling. The company states milligrams per serving in detail, and the pitch is how much collagen you get per unit of price.

Shiseido The Collagen: the extended formula

Two products in the catalogue show the approach well. For Shiseido The Collagen Powder, the manufacturer states 5,000 mg of low-molecular fish collagen per serving, combined with lingonberry and amla, tomato seed extract, cherry blossom extract, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. The brand also notes that the formula minimises the characteristic taste and smell of collagen, which matters more than it sounds if you plan to stir it into coffee every morning.

Shiseido The Collagen Beauty Tablets, the 21-day course, work differently. The daily collagen dose is lower at 1,000 mg, but it comes with a ten-ingredient complex: hyaluronic acid, ceramides, vitamin C, GABA and a patented blend of bilberry, amla, tomato seed and cherry blossom extracts. The daily serving is six tablets.

The takeaway is that comparing the tablets with any powder on milligrams alone is misleading. They are built for different jobs. The powder delivers peptide volume; the tablets deliver a compact format and a broader formula you can throw into a suitcase.

DHC: simple formulas, many formats

DHC Collagen Powder is close to the Shiseido powder on the headline number: the manufacturer states 5,000 mg of collagen peptides per serving plus 50 mg of vitamin C, at 22 kcal per serving, in a 192 g package. The product contains gelatin, which is worth knowing if the source material matters to you.

DHC Collagen, 30 Days is the capsule route: 2,050 mg of fish collagen per serving along with vitamins B1 and B2, in a 180-capsule pack that covers roughly a month. The per-serving collagen is lower than in the powder, but capsules remove the one thing that ends most collagen routines early, which is having to prepare anything at all.

If you have never taken collagen and are unsure whether you will get along with the taste of a powder or a drink, DHC capsules are the low-risk way to start. The rest of the range is on the DHC brand page.

Orihiro: peptide volume and cost per course

Orihiro's Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid Collagen Bag, 180 g is the value benchmark in this comparison. Per 6 g serving the manufacturer states 5,000 mg of collagen peptides, 20 mg of low-molecular hyaluronic acid, 100 mg of glucosamine and 200 µg of ceramides. The peptides are derived from pork and beef. At 6 g a day, a 180 g bag covers about a month.

Orihiro Most Chewable Collagen in peach flavour is a different proposition. Two tablets provide 400 mg of collagen peptides plus L-arginine, L-proline, L-cystine, vitamins B2 and B6 and pantothenic acid. This is not a replacement for a powder course. Think of it as a pleasant daily habit for people who will not stir anything into anything. The full range is on the Orihiro brand page.

Format matters more than the brand name

In practice, collagen courses get abandoned because of inconvenience, not because of the formula. So choose the format first.

  • Powder. The most peptides per yen, but you need a drink or a dish to put it in. Best if you already have a fixed morning ritual: coffee, tea, yoghurt.
  • Capsules and tablets. Nothing to prepare, easy to travel with. Per-serving collagen is usually lower than in powders.
  • Drinkable collagen in bottles. The easiest to take and usually the most expensive per day. Works well as a top-up or a travel format.
  • Chewable tablets. Pleasant taste, small dose. Sensible as an addition rather than the backbone of a routine.

How to compare prices honestly

Comparing pack prices tells you almost nothing, because packs cover different numbers of days. Use this sequence instead.

  1. Find the serving size and the number of servings per pack in the product description.
  2. Divide the pack price in yen by the number of days it covers. That is your cost per day.
  3. Look separately at the milligrams of collagen per serving.
  4. Only then compare. A product at 5,000 mg a day and one at 400 mg a day are different categories, even though both say collagen on the front.
  5. Account for the extras. Ceramides, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are part of the price, and if you currently buy them separately, a combined product may work out cheaper overall.

Frequently asked questions

Which brand is best: Shiseido, DHC or Orihiro? There is no single answer. Choose Shiseido The Collagen if you want the extended formula and are willing to pay for it, DHC if you want a familiar capsule format at a calm price, and Orihiro if your goal is the most peptides per pack.

Can I take collagen alongside other supplements? Japanese brands often combine collagen with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid already. If you take other products, compare the labels so you are not doubling up on the same ingredients, and discuss the combination with a doctor.

Fish collagen or pork and beef collagen? That comes down to personal preference and dietary limits. Shiseido The Collagen and the DHC capsules state fish collagen; the Orihiro powder uses peptides derived from pork and beef.

How long does one course last? Manufacturers size these packs for roughly 20-60 days and print the daily serving on the packaging. Follow the label rather than advice found online.

How long does delivery take? Shipping is from Tokyo, usually 3-10 business days before dispatch, with EMS taking 5-14 days in transit. The minimum order is 22,000 yen in goods, paid by card through Stripe.
